Welfare programs face axe

MORE children are likely to end up in the juvenile justice system and the safety of domestic violence victims will be compromised when two southern programs shut down  in July, a local welfare organisation says.
“I’m very concerned for the safety of women and children,” he said. “The Turning Point program has really stepped into a very complex area where there is violence and inappropriate use of power and control in families and relationships.

Food stamps, federal assistance a way of life for some Shore residents

The number of low-income Monmouth and Ocean counties residents using food stamps and seeking assistance for medical bills hit a 10-year high last year, and new applications continued to pour in during 2010's first quarter, officials said.
