Even With a Cleanup, Spilled Oil Stays With Us

BP, in a series of newspaper advertisements about the Deepwater Horizon disaster, says it is “working around the clock to contain and collect most of the leak” and it will “take full responsibility for cleaning up the spill.”
But if past catastrophes are guides, the cleanup by BP workers will capture only a fraction of the crude belched up by the broken well. Much of the oil will be taken care of by nature; the rest is likely to stay with us for decades.

BP Comes Up With Latest Plan To Stem "Oil Gusher" In US Gulf

Following the failure of its "top-kill" plan to cap the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, British Petroleum (BP) is now planning to try out another high-risk attempt to deal with the worst environmental disaster in American history.

The latest plan, which will take at least a week to be executed, involves placing a cap over the leak which will be done using robots.

Gulf oil spill now largest in U.S. history as BP continues plug effort

NEW ORLEANS — The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has spewed more oil than originally estimated, surpassing the Exxon Valdez tanker disaster in 1989 in Alaska to become the biggest oil disaster in U.S. history, federal scientists said Thursday.

Crist asks BP to pay for oil-spill tourism ads

"We need to advertise, get the message out that our beaches are clean, our water is clean, the fish are biting, please come to the Panhandle, it's beautiful," Crist said after appearing before the Visit Florida board.
Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association president Carol Dover, who also serves on the Visit Florida board, told the governor Panhandle occupancy rates usually are booked at 90 percent or more for the summer tourism season but that they've now dropped to less than 20 percent.

Halliburton's murky name resurfaces after Gulf of Mexico oil spill

Halliburton is one of the world's largest oil-field services corporations. And, as we all know, the odious company that made Dick Cheney super rich. The same company that received exclusive no-bid government contracts for almost everything involving oil in the invasion of Iraq.
Halliburton might be in for some legal problems in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill because it was in charge of "cementing" on the rig.

Plan B to plug Gulf oil leak: the junk shot

Fuelling fears of an extended environmental disaster, BP''s giant containment box lay unused on the seabed, a four-storey chamber and the company's best short-term solution to containing the slick. After the setback on Saturday, engineers scrambled to find other solutions and are considering using debris, including tire shards and golf balls, to plug the damaged blowout preventer on the well.
Using a technique called a "junk shot," where debris is pumped into the preventer at high pressure, is one option. Another is attaching a smaller, "top-hat" preventer on top of the damaged one.
"They are actually going to take a bunch of debris -- some shredded up tires, golf balls
and things like that--and under very high pressure shoot it into the preventer itself and see if they can clog it up to stop the leak," U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who is leading the U.S. government's response effort, told CBS's Face the Nation.

US Oil Spill: Balls Of Tar On Alabama Beach

Balls of tar have washed up on a popular Alabama beach as efforts to contain the BP oil spill suffered a major setback.
The oil reached a white sand beach on Dauphin Island - a resort popular with swimmers and sunbathers.
It is believed to be the first evidence of spilled oil in the populated Alabama area.
Reports of the balls of tar came as BP confirmed that an attempt to contain oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico with a huge metal dome had floundered.

'The Oil Catastrophe could turn out to be America's worst ecological disaster yet'.

Obama knows that widening oil drilling techniques are not going to fix the American energy problem. As he said in late March from the Andrews Airforce Base in Maryland, where he lifted the moratorium on off-shore drilling: the US cannot drill its way out of the energy problems.
