Balls of tar have washed up on a popular Alabama beach as efforts to contain the BP oil spill suffered a major setback.
The oil reached a white sand beach on Dauphin Island - a resort popular with swimmers and sunbathers.
It is believed to be the first evidence of spilled oil in the populated Alabama area.
Reports of the balls of tar came as BP confirmed that an attempt to contain oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico with a huge metal dome had floundered.
